DENTON - The North Texas tennis team notched a 4-0 sweep over Conference USA foe Louisiana Tech on Friday afternoon at the Waranch Tennis Complex to win its third straight match.

The Mean Green (5-9) started by claiming the doubles point with wins from the teams of Maria Ponomareva and Kexuan Zhou and Sophia Hummel and Saki Oyama, who won 6-4 and 7-5, respectively.

Then in singles play, Ponomareva cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory in the No. 3 spot, followed by a 6-2, 6-2 win by Lucie Devier in the No. 1 singles match. Finally, Nidhi Surapaneni clinched the match for the Mean Green with a 6-3, 6-2 win in the No. 2 spot. UNT was also up in the other three singles matches when the match was clinched.

The win was the second 4-0 victory in the last three matches, and the other match in the three-game streak was a 4-1 win.

Head coach Sujay Lama said he was happy with the way his team got ahead and finished its opponent off decisively.

"A lot came together today," Lama said. "We've been working all year for this - for a performance like this. Once we broke through with the doubles point, I think that was really the difference. We carried it over to singles. We started amazing. We were like the tiger today. We smelled blood and went for the kill today. Once you start winning, it builds confidence and has you feeling good. And when you're feeling good, you're playing better."

Up next
The Mean Green will hit the road and travel to San Antonio for a 2 p.m. match against C-USA rival UTSA. They'll return home for an April 3 match against Tulsa at 11 a.m.
