MGSB Splits Day Three of Boerner Invitational
3/6/2021 5:35:00 PM | Softball
ARLINGTON – North Texas was on opposite ends of two well-pitched ballgames on day three of the Boerner Invitational as they knocked off Missouri State 2-1 before dropping a contest to Wichita State 13-2. The Mean Green (10-5) will close out the weekend as they take on UT Arlington Sunday at 2 p.m.
Â
"We're making bad decisions at the plate, we're not very confident and we're pressing a little bit," head coach Rodney DeLong said. "You can see it with a lot of our good hitters swinging at bad pitches and not being on time when we're up in the count. It's things that are controllable, we'll get better and we'll learn from today."
Â
Through four games in Arlington North Texas has been outscored 21-10 while only hitting at a .206 clip as a team while the Mean Green pitching staff has been tagged for 26 hits and an opponent batting average of .243.
Â
Game 1 – North Texas 2, Missouri State 1 (8)
Saturday started with a good old fashioned pitcher's duel between the Mean Green and Bears. North Texas was able to come away with a walk-off win in the eighth inning for the second consecutive matchup against Missouri State. North Texas beat Missouri State 2-1 in extra inning walk-off fashion during the 2020 season as well.
Â
North Texas starter Hope Trautwein earned a no-decision after throwing six innings in which she surrendered one unearned run, two hits, two walks and struck out 13. The outing was Trautwein's third multi-digit strikeout game this season.
Â
GiGi Wall would earn her fifth win of the season with 2.0 IP in which she didn't allow a hit or run while only walking one and striking out a pair.
Â
Neither team was able to muster much of any offense throughout the first five innings of the affair. Molly Rainey led off the bottom of the first inning with a walk before a Missouri State error and an infield single for Tarah Hilton would load the bases with just one out but the Mean Green would not be able to get any runs out of the situation.
Â
From that point on it was 14-straight hitters retired between Trautwein and Missouri State starter Steffany Dickerson before Trautwein issued a two-out walk in the fourth inning after setting down the first 11 Bear hitters in order. Dickerson would set down 14-straight North Texas hitters after the bases-loaded threat in the first.
Â
Missouri State would score the games' first run in the sixth after a leadoff single ended Trautwein's no-hit bid. A pinch runner would come around to score on a passed ball after back-to-back groundouts moved her to third. The Mean Green would respond in the bottom half with back-to-back hits from Molly Rainey (double) and Tuesday DerMargosian (bunt single) and a Missouri State error.
Â
Both teams would go scoreless in the seventh to force extra innings. The tournament implemented an international tie-break rule which put a runner at second with no outs in each extra frame played. Wall would make quick work of the Bears in the top half of the eighth without allowing the runner to leave second base, setting up a walk-off chance for North Texas.
Â
A walk to Molly Rainey and a stolen base from Katy Truitt would lead to a sacrifice fly from DerMargosian that gave the Mean Green the victory, bouncing back from last nights' loss to Iowa State.
Â
Game 2 – Wichita State 13, North Texas 2
North Texas fell into a 5-0 hole after a slew of infield singles before coming to the plate in the first and that was the closest the Mean Green would be to the Shockers at the end of an inning the whole game.
Â
Wichita State would add three runs in the third inning before the Mean Green pushed a run across. A one-out double from Maia Wark would score Kalei Christensen from first to get the Mean Green on the board.
Â
The teams would trade scoreless at-bats in the fifth before Wichita State pulled away with a five run sixth inning that included three home runs that all came with at least an out. The 13 runs and 14 hits allowed were the most the Mean Green have surrendered during the 2021 campaign.
Â
An error from Wichita State would push the second North Texas run across the plate and back-to-back singles from Kourtney Williams and Rainey would load the bases but that would be all the offense the Mean Green could muster.
