DALLAS - The North Texas men's golf team began its spring tournament schedule in Dallas at the Trinity Forest Invitational and is in prime position after Sunday's opening round, just two shots back of leader and host SMU and in second place, three shots clear of third-place Little Rock.
The Mean Green, who entered the tournament ranked No. 18 in the nation, were led by freshman Nikhil Gopal, who made his collegiate debut after enrolling in January. Gopal shot a 1-under-par 70 and tallied four birdies in his first collegiate round. Senior Viktor Forslund and junior Lenny Bergsson are both tied for fourth after firing even-par 71s. Freshmen Vicente Marzilio and Diego Prone are tied for 32nd after shooting 74.
"I was happy with how the guys came out and competed today," UNT head coach Brad Stracke said. "Viktor, Lenny and Nikhil led the way with some impressive rounds under tough conditions. The course is playing firm and fast, and you really need to pay attention to your approach shots in order to play well."
The Mean Green will enter Monday's second round just two shots back of No. 13 SMU, and will be paired with the Mustangs and third-place Little Rock, which is 5-over par and three shots back of North Texas. The five threesomes will tee off from the first hole beginning at 9:20 a.m.
Fans are not allowed in attendance due to COVID-19 protocols, but they can follow the tournament on GolfStat and can follow the Mean Green on Twitter and Facebook while also getting daily recaps at MeanGreenSports.com.
