HOUSTON — The North Texas soccer team takes on Charlotte in the first round of the 2020-21 Conference USA Championship Tuesday at 1:30 CT.
The Mean Green (7-2-1, 4-1-1) and 49ers' (4-5-0, 4-2-0) first round match will be broadcast on ESPN+ and is being played from Rice University where the Owls are hosting this season's conference tournament.
UNT, which has won 16 conference titles in its 25-year history, is this week aiming to win its ninth C-USA trophy. North Texas joined the league in 2013 and its eight trophies so far are already a league record for women's soccer. The Mean Green have won the last three C-USA Tournaments.
This season C-USA moved to a shortened six-match conference scheduled and broke the 14-team league into two divisions. The Mean Green finished second in the West Division and Charlotte finished third in the East Division. UNT and Charlotte have not played one another since 2017 when they met in the finals of that season's C-USA Tournament. The Mean Green won 3-1 in a penalty kick shootout after a 0-0 draw through the first 110 minutes to claim the championship. It was the first of the Mean Green's current run of three straight league titles.
UNT leads the nation in shots per game (25.9) and shots on goal per game (10.7). Three Mean Green women's soccer student-athletes rank in the top 75 in the nation in shots per game, including Allie Byrd who ranks 17th (4.1 per game). Byrd also ranks 23rd in the nation with 2.1 shots on goal per game.
UNT is 7-0-0 all-time versus Charlotte.
