MGSB Sweeps Saturday Doubleheader at UTEP
4/17/2021 10:10:00 PM | Softball
EL PASO – Tuesday DerMargosian, Maia Wark and Kalei Christensen all homered and the pitching staff held UTEP to just three runs on eight hits during a doubleheader sweep on Saturday by scores of 4-1 and 11-2, moving the Mean Green winning streak to nine games. The wins give North Texas the series win over UTEP and they will look for the complete sweep tomorrow at noon CT.
Â
"We hit the ball good," head coach Rodney DeLong said. "In that first game we played really good defense, GiGi threw well and Hope came in and closed the door. Overall it was a good effort and our energy was great all day too. We have to come out with energy tomorrow, same energy we had today and we'll play well tomorrow. It'll be an early game, it'll be tough to get the fourth win but it's an important one. Hopefully we'll come out hungry and try to get the sweep."
Â
Game One – UNT 4, UTEP 1
Â
North Texas (23-9, 4-2 C-USA) got the doubleheader started with an 11-hit outburst from the offense and another impressive start from Wall. The graduate transfer picked up her ninth win of the year, and 90th of her career (with 79 coming during her NAIA career at Oklahoma City)Â as she went five innings for the second-straight start and allowed just one run on three hits, two strikeouts and a walk.
Â
The offense would get the scoring started in the second after a single from Kailey Gamble led to a UTEP (8-19, 3-8 C-USA) error that scored Tarah Hilton who led off the inning with a double and advanced Gamble to second. After back-to-back strikeouts, Ashlyn Walker would drive in Gamble with an RBI single to center.
Â
Wall would go on to retire seven-straight UTEP batters from the second to fifth inning to keep the two-run cousin intact. The Mean Green would add a run in the fifth on a solo home run from DerMargosian, her third of the season. They would eventually load the bases with two outs but leave the runners stranded.
Â
UTEP got their one run of the game in the bottom half of the inning after back-to-back singles and a sacrifice bunt put runners at second and third. The Miners would grab a run on a play that resulted in two outs after an impressive diving stop from Mikayla Smith led to a back-pick from Gamble to Tayla Evans to catch a Miner runner sleeping.
Â
Evans would finish a streak of three-straight two-out singles in the sixth with an RBI to center that scored DerMargosian. Hope Trautwein would come on in the sixth and pick up her sixth save of the year with four strikeouts over two innings of work with one hit allowed.
Â
Game 2 – UNT 11, UTEP 2 (5)
Â
The Mean Green completed the doubleheader sweep and claimed the series with a 14-hit outburst in an 11-2 run-rule victory in the night cap. The 14 hits are the second-most in a Conference USA game during DeLong's tenure, the most came in a 16-hit performance at FIU on March 31, 2019.
Â
Wark got the scoring started after she finished off a 10-pitch at-bat with her third home run of the season and second of the series, the two-run blast put the Mean Green up 2-0 in the first. Janie Worthington picked up her fifth win of the season with 3.0 IP allowing no runs on two hits and striking out one.
Â
North Texas would add two more runs in the second on a solo home run from Christensen and an RBI double from DerMargosian. An RBI single from Christensen in the third would score Hilton after she reached on a double to put the Mean Green ahead 5-0.
Â
The fourth inning would prove to be a huge blow landed by the Mean Green as they plated six runs to open the game up. A walk to Lexi Cobb followed by four-straight singles from Candain Callahan, DerMargosian, Wark and Evans would score the first run of the inning and leave the bases loaded for Hilton. After she reached on a fielder's choice, Evans would score and Gamble would reach on an error before an RBI single from Christensen would drive in both of them to make the score 10-0. An RBI single from Miranda Holguin would score Christensen and put the Mean Green up 11-0 as Worthington gave way to Ariel Thompson.
Â
Thompson gave up two runs on two hits in the fourth inning, sophomore Meagan Youngman picked up her first career hit while pinch hitting in the fifth before Bailey Tindell came on in the bottom half to give up no runs and no hits while striking out one to end the game and clinch the Saturday sweep.Â
