EL PASO – Maia Wark and Tayla Evans both homered and Hope Trautwein picked up her eighth win of the season as North Texas finished off a four-game sweep of UTEP 7-2 on Sunday afternoon. The Mean Green have now won their last 10 games and will head to Stephenville for a midweek non-conference doubleheader with Tarleton State on Wednesday, April 21 at 2 and 4 p.m.
Â
"We grinded today, four games in three days is really tough," head coach Rodney DeLong said. "Kids grinded out some at-bats and got some big hits. Our pitchers threw well, overall good effort and good energy."
Â
The Mean Green (24-9, 6-2 C-USA) finished the weekend outscoring the Miners (8-20, 3-9 C-USA) 31-6 and outhitting them 46-18 over the four-game set. North Texas had 15 multi-hit games from eight different players. Maia Wark posted two hits in all four games with Tarah Hilton and Tuesday DerMargosian notching at least a pair of hits in three of the four games.
Â
Trautwein picked up the win with 5.0 IP allowing just two runs on five hits and striking out seven. She made more history with her the 600th career strikeout in the second to become just the second player in program history to reach the milestone.
Â
After going down in order in the first, the Mean Green offense was kick started by a leadoff single from Hilton in the second. After a walk to Kailey Gamble and a UTEP error that allowed Kalei Christensen to reach and load the bases, Ashlyn Walker would shoot an RBI single to left to plate the game's first run.
Â
Mikayla Smith would reach on another UTEP error that scored Gamble before a third run would come home on a double play from the Miners. UTEP would threaten in the bottom half of the inning with their first two hitters reaching on an error and single, putting runners at the corners with nobody out. Trautwein would field her position well to cut down a squeeze attempt for the first out and then get a pop out and her strikeout number 600 on her career to end the threat.
Â
North Texas would add three more runs in the third, Wark led off with an infield single before Tayla Evans hit her team-leading seventh home run of the year to left-center to plate a pair. Hilton would then double for her second hit of the day and sixth of the series before Christensen singled up the middle to drive in her fifth run of the weekend in El Paso to make the score 6-0.
Â
UTEP would threaten in the fourth with runners at first and second with one out, but back-to-back strikeouts from Trautwein would end the frame and keep the Miners out of the run column. However, after the Mean Green failed to cash in after Christensen had walk and Miranda Holguin singled to put runners at second and third with two away UTEP would get on the board with a two-out two-run home run to center, making the score 6-2.
Â
The Mean Green would add a run on a Wark solo home run in the sixth, her third of the series to make it a 7-2 game. GiGi Wall would come on in relief in the sixth to throw two perfect innings with a pair of strikeouts to seal the win and secure the sweep.
