MGSB Falls in Opening Conference Doubleheader

DENTON – The North Texas softball team opened up its 2021 Conference USA slate on Friday, falling in both games of a doubleheader for the first time since 2018. North Texas fell to UAB 3-2 in game one before dropping game two by a score of 5-1.
The Mean Green and Blazers will play a second doubleheader on Saturday afternoon with the first game starting at noon with game two beginning 30 minutes after completion of game one.
"We've got to be better at the plate tomorrow and adjust to what they're doing," head coach Rodney DeLong said. "We have to let go of today, that's why we play the amount of games we do in a season. It's a day-to-day thing and we have to come out and play better tomorrow."
North Texas will try to bounce back on Saturday after dropping their first two conference games for the first time since 2016. The Mean Green now have a 3-8 record at home against the Blazers since joining Conference USA prior to the 2014 season.
Game 1 – UNT 2, UAB 3
Tayla Evans got the scoring in game one started with a two-out two-run home run to put the Mean Green ahead 2-0 early. Hope Trautwein got the start in the circle for the Mean Green and threw 5.0 innings allowing one earned run on five hits, striking out nine and walking four in a no decision effort.
Trautwein's nine strikeouts made it three consecutive conference starts with nine or more strikeouts, she also hit the 550 career strikeout mark with a pair in the fourth inning.
UAB would break into the run column with a leadoff home run from KK Crocker in the fifth inning. The Blazers would load up the bases with two outs before a Trautwein strikeout ended the frame. GiGi Wall would be tagged with the loss in relief after 2.0 IP where she allowed two runs on one hit, two strikeouts and two walks.
The Blazers would load up the bases in the seventh with just one out after a walk, error and hit by pitch. Wall would then get a huge strikeout to get UAB to its final out of the game but the Mean Green could not make a play on a dribbler in front of home plate that allowed the tying and go-ahead runs to cross the plate. UAB would seal the comeback win with a quick bottom half of the inning and hand North Texas its first home loss since 2019.
Game 2 – UNT 1, UAB 5
UAB's offense had a different cadence in the second game of the evening as they exploded for five runs in the first frame. Three consecutive hits to open the game put the Mean Green in a 3-0 hole before they recorded an out and then a pair of North Texas errors mixed in with a single and a few walks put UAB up 5-0.
North Texas would respond with a run in the bottom half of the inning after a pair of walks to Molly Rainey and Tuesday DerMargosian got things going. Rainey would score after a UAB error on a double steal but North Texas would leave the bases loaded in the frame.
A one-out double from Evans in the third would be the Mean Green's first hit of the game and they would add two more on singles from Kailey Gamble and Mikayla Smith in the fourth. They would then go hitless until a two-out single from Tarah Hilton in the seventh.
