Freshmen Lead UNT On Day 1 At C-USA Championship

TEXARKANA, Ark. - The North Texas men's golf team began play on Monday at the Conference USA Championship at Texarkana Country Club and finished the opening day in third place on a day that saw the Mean Green in contention throughout the round and in first place at some points in the day.
The Mean Green finished the day with an even-par 288 and were led by freshmen Vicente Marzilio and Nikhil Gopal, who shot 2-under 70 and even-par 72, respectively. Junior Lenny Bergsson and redshirt senior Sean Wilcox rounded out the scorers on Monday, as they are both tied for 20th at 1-over par. Marzilio is tied for fifth, and Gopal is tied for 14th entering Tuesday's second round. The Mean Green were 5-under on the front nine before coming in at 5-over on the back nine.
"We played solid today in some windy conditions," UNT head coach Brad Stracke said. "Vicente had a great round leading the team today."
The Mean Green enter the second round on Tuesday five shots off the lead, held by No. 44 UTSA, and two back of second-place No. 33 Charlotte. They are one shot up on fourth-place Louisiana Tech (+1). Teams will play three rounds of stroke play, which will conclude on Wednesday before the top four teams advance to match play on Thursday, with the winner earning a berth in the NCAA Regional tournament.
The Mean Green will tee off from the first hole on Tuesday and will be paired with UTSA and Charlotte beginning at 9:20 a.m., and going through 10 a.m., when Marzilio will begin his round.
