TEXARKANA, Ark. - After a heroic and dramatic finish in Wednesday night's match-play semifinal win over UAB, the UNT men's golf team fell in the final at the Conference USA Championship, dropping the championship match 3-0-2 to Middle Tennessee, which secured its third straight C-USA title.
"Middle had three great days in a row," UNT head coach Brad Stracke said. "They played flawlessly and deserved to win this week."
While the Middle Tennessee was flawless, there was also some bad luck, namely for freshman Nikhil Gopal, who saw his opponent answer one of his birdies with an eagle and even answer one of his eagles with a rare double-eagle on a par 5, 555-yard hole. Sean Wilcox, the hero of Wednesday's semifinal win, also saw his opponent answer a birdie with an eagle to claim a hole.
Despite the loss, there was a lot of positive to be taken from the run at the title, most notably the play of freshmen Gopal and Vicente Marzilio, who had a late surge Wednesday to win the three-round stroke play individual championship at 11-under par. That win earned Marzilio a spot in the NCAA Regional tournament to be played May 17-19 at a site to be determined. Junior Lenny Bergsson also notched a top-10 finish individually, tying for ninth.
"I'm proud of how we competed," Stracke said. "We had a fabulous day yesterday and have a lot to build on."
