DENTON – After claiming their first ever outright regular season conference championship, the North Texas softball team earned four of the five individual specialty awards from the league office on Tuesday while placing a program-best eight players on the all-conference teams. The four specialty awards are the most by any one team in conference history.
Â
Hope Trautwein was named the Pitcher of the Year, Tuesday DerMargosian was named the Newcomer of the Year, Janie Worthington was tabbed the Freshman of the Year and Rodney DeLong earned Coach of the Year honors.
Â
DeLong earned his second Conference USA Coach of the Year honor after leading the Mean Green to a program-best 37 wins, 18-game conference winning streak and their second conference championship in three seasons. North Texas dropped their first two conference games of 2021 and went on to win the final 18 they played in route to the first outright title in program history while outscoring opponents 95-33 and not allowing more than five runs in any of it's 20 Conference USA matchups.
Â
Trautwein was named the Pitcher of the Year for the first time in her career and becomes the first North Texas pitcher to ever earn the honor, the senior has been named the Conference USA Preseason Pitcher of the Year in each of the last two seasons. The Pflugerville native was named the Pitcher of the Week four times in 2021 and leads Conference USA in ERA (1.39), strikeouts (220) and saves (7). She set the North Texas single-season strikeout record in 2021 and has tied the all-time wins record with 60 and has more strikeouts individually than seven different Conference USA teams. She hit the 200 strikeout mark on the season before any other conference pitcher eclipsed the century mark. Trautwein made headlines on April 11 when she tossed the first all-strikeout Perfect Game in NCAA Division I history at Arkansas – Pine Bluff.
Â
DerMargosian became just the third player in program history to be named the Newcomer of the Year. The graduate transfer wasted no time making her mark in Denton after transferring from Texas at the premature end of the 2020 season. During her lone season for the Mean Green, the Fort Worth native led the team and ranked second in Conference USA with a .414 batting average, the current program single-season best. DerMargosian accounted for more hits (55) and home runs (4) during her one season in Denton than she did in all four seasons at Texas combined. She finished the regular season hitting .414 while reaching base at a .455 mark and slugging at a .564 clip while hitting primarily out of the leadoff spot. DerMargosian accounted for the program's first five-hit game on March 30 at Abilene Christian.
Â
Worthington becomes the first player in program history to be named the Freshman of the Year after a phenomenal rookie campaign. The freshman became the first player in program history to account for an unbeaten regular season as she posted a 9-0 record, including a 7-0 mark in conference play. She's posted the third-lowest single-season ERA so far in 2021 and is holding opposing batters to a .163 batting average while only issuing 10 walks compared to 94 strikeouts. In her final start of the regular season, Worthington tossed the first no-hitter of her career as she struck out five and walked one at Louisiana Tech on May 8 after accounting for three no-hit innings and picking up the win in a 10-inning thriller on May 7.
Â
Along with their individual accolades, all three players were named First Team All-Conference by the league's coaches. Trautwein earns First Team distinction for the second time in her career after earning the distinction in 2019, DerMargosian and Worthington join the First Team to give North Texas the most First Team All-Conference players they've had in a single season. Worthington is the only freshman that made it on the First Team.
Â
North Texas also has three players on both the Second Team and All-Freshman team, catcher Ashlyn Walker infielder Kailey Gamble and pitcher GiGi Wall all earned Second Team All-Conference honors while Walker joined Worthington and outfielder Maia Wark on the All-Freshman team. North Texas is the only school in Conference USA to have at least three players on each All-Conference team.
Â
The Mean Green begin postseason play on Thursday May 13 when they open their time in Bowling Green, Kentucky at the Conference USA Championship, 2021 marks the second consecutive tournament where the Mean Green earned the No. 1 overall seed and picked up a double bye into the double-elimination portion of the tournament. All games will be streamed on ESPN+ with exception of Saturday's Championship game that will air on CBS Sports Network.
