Munoz, Ortiz Competing In Olympics

DENTON - Two North Texas golf alumni are set to compete in the Tokyo Olympics this week, as Sebastian Munoz and Carlos Ortiz will go for the gold in men's golf for their home countries of Colombia and Mexico, respectively.
Both are fresh off appearances in The Open Championship a couple of weeks ago. Both missed the cut but have had stellar years on the PGA Tour and are the two most recent Tour winners the Mean Green program has produced. The competition at Kasumigaseki Country Club, about 35 miles from downtown Tokyo, begins Wednesday with the opening round at 5:30 p.m., which is when all four rounds will begin until the conclusion on Saturday. All four rounds will be broadcast on Golf Channel, beginning at 5:30 p.m., and going into the early morning hours each day. Munoz will tee off in the third group at 5:52 p.m., and will be paired with Henrik Norlander and Joachim B. Hansen. Ortiz will follow in the next group at 6:03 p.m., and will be paired with Antoine Rozner and Guido Migliozzi.
Munoz, a 2015 UNT graduate, is currently ranked 79th in the world and 63rd in the FedEx Cup standings. He has 13 career top-10 finishes, including four this year, highlighted by his T3 finish at the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth. He's won nearly $1.9 million this season in prize money. He won his first PGA event at the Sanderson Farms Championship in September 2019.
Ortiz, a 2013 UNT graduate, is currently ranked 61st in the world and 35th in the FedEx Cup standings. He has 10 career top-10 finishes, including three this year, highlighted by his first career PGA Tour victory at the Vivint Houston Open back in November. So far this season, he's won almost $2.6 million in prize money.
"Carlos and Sebastian have played in the most prestigious events on the PGA Tour, and now they get to represent their countries in the Olympics," UNT head coach Brad Stracke said. "The stage doesn't get any bigger. These two have brought so much attention not only to the UNT men's golf program but to our university, as well. To say I am proud of them is an understatement."
