CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas— On the second day of the three-day Contender CrossFit Islander Open, the North Texas tennis team won two doubles flight championships. Lucie Devier/Jasmine Adams and Liisa Vehvilainen/Saki Oyama won their respective flights doubles championships Saturday with convincing victories.
Devier/Adams defeated a UTSA doubles team in the finals 6-3 and Vehvilainen/Oyama cruised to a 6-1 victory over a Texas A&M Corpus Christi doubles team that reached the NCAA Tournament last season.
In singles, the Mean Green went 7-0 on day two and reached the finals of six of the eight flights. They are now 14-1 combined in singles in the Islander Open.
"I love the atmosphere of the team this year and the newcomers are hard workers and give off a lot of energy," said Devier. "We are very close to one another and you can see our team shining in the important moments."
Devier and Adams won their flight championship after winning three straight doubles matches. In the semifinal round, the UNT pair were resilient and dominate late in the close 7-6(2) win.
"I think we have good potential," said the senior Devier about her partnership with the freshman Adams. "She has very good first shots, is very efficient, which gives me the perfect volley. I love how we play together."
Also on Saturday, Kexuan Zhou and Sophia Hummel reached the finals of another doubles flight championship, however, fell to a Texas A&M Corpus Christi doubles team that reached the NCAA Tournament last season and was playing at their home facility.
UNT will finish the Islander Open Sunday with six of the eight women on the team playing for a singles flight championship to go along with Devier and Adams' doubles championship.
Saki Oyama, Liisa Vehvilainen, Maria Ponomareva, Likhitha Kalava, Zhou and Devier will all play in a singles championship match Sunday. In the semifinals of her singles flight championship Adams was pulled due to an injury.
