DENTON - The UNT divers will compete at the Houston Diving Invite on Friday and Saturday after opening their season last weekend at New Mexico State and New Mexico.
North Texas is part of the field that also includes host Houston, UIW and Idaho, as the Mean Green come off a successful weekend in New Mexico that saw Brigid Krbec win the 3-meter springboard against New Mexico State and Saylor Hawkins finish third. They took second and third, respectively, in the 1-meter. Hawkins also took second in the 3-meter against New Mexico. The team will also get its first chance to compete in the platform and in the team diving event this season.
"The divers had a strong showing last weekend against NMSU and UNM under a tough set of circumstances," diving coach Stephanie O'Callaghan said. "They've had a great week of practice so far, learned a few new dives and are getting locked in for this weekend's meet. It will be the first of three times that we will compete against Houston which I'm excited for - they're a strong team and one we will be competing against this year at conference so we will use this weekend as a good marker to see where we stack up and what we need to focus on moving forward as we look ahead to midseason and conference championships. It will be our first time training and competing tower this season, and this is a great meet and great facility for that. It will also be the first time we get to compete in the diving team event which should be a fun experience and a great chance for some team bonding and camaraderie."Â
The competition will kick off Friday at 10 a.m., with the 1-meter competition, with the 3-meter set for 2 p.m. The platform will begin at 10 a.m., on Saturday, before the new team event at 1:30 p.m., which will feature two Mean Green teams of three divers apiece performing two dives each in each of the three disciplines.
