DENTON - When the UNT swimming and diving program takes to the pool in Las Cruces, New Mexico, on Friday it will mark the first time this season the swimming and diving teams will compete together, as the divers make their competitive debut and the swimmers return to action for the first time against Division I competition.
The Mean Green will compete at New Mexico State on Friday and then at New Mexico on Saturday in Albuquerque, and head coach Brittany Roth said she is looking forward to seeing the team compete on back-to-back days against quality competition.
"We are excited to hit the road with the team and begin our meets with NMSU and New Mexico this weekend," she said. "It will be two days of challenging competition as the team will put together back-to-back days of racing, which helps build their physical and mental stamina in preparation for The American Championships in February. I'm excited to see our team come together and compete, and I'm looking forward to seeing our team members put together their range of events across the two days."
While the swimmers have a competitive meet under their belts after setting numerous meet records at the Sam Freas Invite, hosted by Oklahoma Christian, a couple of weeks ago, the divers will be competing against other schools for the first time this season.
"The divers are looking strong," diving coach Stephanie O'Callaghan said. "Green vs. White was a great opportunity to get back in the groove of competing, and I think they're ready for a great weekend. It's still early in the season so we are still building our lists up, but we are focused on competing the basics well and working on competing with consistency, finesse and confidence to start things off with some good momentum."
The meet at New Mexico State will begin at 5 p.m., Friday, and will be broadcast on Facebook Live.
