UNT looks to bounce back after falling at home Wednesday to SFA
DENTON, Texas (Nov. 15, 2022) – After dropping a home contest on Wednesday night against SFA, North Texas looks to bounce back as they travel on the road for the first time in 2022-23 when they take on Wichita State.
It will be just the second all-time matchup between the Shockers and the Mean Green with Wichita St. taking home the only matchup between the two schools last season 67-64 in Denton.
UNT picked up a 71-58 win over Texas A&M-Texarkana to open the season. The Mean Green will be looking to start the year 2-1 for the third consecutive season under head coach Jalie Mitchell.
The Mean Green are coming off one of their best seasons in 2021-22, earning a berth in the Women's NIT for the first time since 2002 when Mitchell was a player and won Sun Belt Player of the Year honors and led the Mean Green to the WNIT in back-to-back seasons.
Wichita State, meanwhile, comes into the contest 2-1 overall with wins over Alcorn State and Oral Roberts as well as a loss to Omaha on their ledger thus far this season. The Shockers went 14-16 a season ago.

Scouting the Shockers
- Wichita State heads into the 2022-23 season with a pair of wins in their first three games. The Shockers took down both Alcorn State and Oral Roberts while falling to Omaha.
- The Shockers finished last season 14-16 overall and fell in the opening game of the American Conference Tournament.
- Wichita State is led offensively by senior guard Trajata Colbert. A stalwart in the offensive lineup Colbert is averaging 16.3 points and 6.7 rebounds per contest thus far this season.
- The Shockers have also gotten solid production from junior guard DJ McCarty. A Texas native (Desoto), McCarty is producing 15.7 points per contest and led WSU in scoring with 23 points in the win over Oral Roberts.
- Two other players for the Shockers are averaging double figures as Jane Asinde is scoring 12.0 points per game while graduate student Curtessia Dean is averaging 11.7.
- This matchup will be a yearly conference contest in the near future with both teams competing in the American in 2023-24.
- UNT will be led this season by two-time All-Conference performer Quincy Noble, who was named to the Preseason All-C-USA team prior to the season. Noble led the Mean Green with 14.4 points per game a season ago en route to earning Second Team All-CUSA honors.
- Also returning to the roster is junior Tommisha Lampkin who appeared in 28 games a season ago and averaged 5.4 points per contest. Lampkin led the Mean Green with a 17-point, 15-rebound double-double in the win over Texas A&M-Texarkana.
- Sophomore Kendall McGruder also returns after a strong freshman campaign that saw her appear in 28 games and average 3.5 points per contest.
- The Mean Green will feature a vastly new lineup in 22-23 with nine newcomers to the roster including five transfers and four new freshmen.
- The fresh faces are highlighted by junior Jaaucklyn Moore, who comes to UNT after two extremely successful seasons at UIW. Last season, Moore led the Cardinals to their first-ever NCAA Tournament as they won the Southland Tournament title and was named a First Team All-Southland Conference performer.
- UNT also added four talented freshmen, one of which, Breanna Davis, comes to UNT with a family pedigree. Davis' father, Chris, was selected to the UNT Hall of Fame in 2008. Davis scored 10 points in her collegiate debut against Texas A&M-Texarkana.
- UNT was handed its first loss of the 2022-23 season Thursday, falling 80-49 inside the Super Pit against SFA.
- The Mean Green were led offensively by Moore who finished with 17 points but were outscored 55-16 across the second and third quarters in the loss.
- Noble joined Moore in double figures with 12 points as UNT falls to 1-1 on the young season.
- North Texas started the game strong, jumping ahead 7-4 early on a 3-pointer from Noble and found themselves down 13-12 at the end of the first quarter.
- SFA stepped on the gas in the second, however, using a 25-5 run over the first eight minutes of the quarter to take a 38-17 lead and ultimately take home the victory.
