Men's Hoops Bounces Back With 61-52 Win
11/19/2022 8:17:00 PM | Men's Basketball
DENTON — With starting guard Rubin Jones and all-conference guard Tylor Perry back and healthy, the North Texas men's basketball team beat Fresno State Saturday afternoon, 61-52, at the Super Pit.
Perry, who missed the first two games of the year due to injury, scored a game-high 21 points. He nailed four 3-pointers, including his first three attempts, and grabbed four rebounds and had three assists in 32 minutes played.
"It felt really good to be back," Perry said postgame. "Rubin, Abou (Ousmane) and I are the most experienced guys on the team so obviously it's important to have us all healthy and out there. I think it showed today. We are a team with a lot of depth and talent."
UNT (2-1) held Fresno State (1-3) to just five points in the final seven minutes and 52 seconds of the game as they pulled away with their fifth straight regular season home victory. During that final stretch, the Mean Green increased its narrow lead from three points to the eventual nine-point victory.
"Toughest team wins," Perry said. "We locked down late."
Jones, who missed the last five months after having offseason surgery, scored four points and had three rebounds in limited playing time but clearly made a difference in the offense.
North Texas knocked down nine 3-pointers Saturday, which was almost as much as they had in the first two games combined – 11. Newcomer Jayden Martinez made two 3-pointers Saturday in route to a 10-point performance that was second-most on the Mean Green. Marintez also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds Saturday.
UNT outrebounded the Bulldogs 39-25 and made more free throws than Fresno State attempted.
Next up for North Texas is a home game against Paul Quinn College on Tuesday Nov. 22 at 7 p.m. CT.
