HOUSTON - As the North Texas swimming and diving program makes the leap into The American this season, head coach Brittany Roth and the Mean Green were able to test themselves over the weekend against some new conference foes at the Phill Hansel Invitational at the University of Houston.
The Mean Green finished fifth in the meet, just behind fourth-place Tulane, and had several student-athletes achieve personal bests, including a handful of fourth-place finishes in loaded fields.
Sophomore Shaena McCloud notched a pair of fourth-place showings in both the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly while also swimming on the 200 free relay (fifth place), 200 medley relay (fourth place) and 400 free relay (fifth place). Sophomore Laura Mazzotta finished fourth in the 100 breaststroke and fifth in the 200 breaststroke, while also swimming on the 200 medley relay team that took fourth place. Senior London Farris finished seventh in the 50 freestyle, 200 freestyle and 100 freestyle (PR) while also swimming on the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.
In the diving events, graduate Brigid Krbec finished sixth in the 1-meter springboard with a personal-best mark of 263.15 and led the Mean Green in the 3-meter, as well, with an eighth-place finish. Krbec also PRed in the platform, along with freshman Gabi Somoza.
Kennedy Eichler (200 backstroke, 400 IM, 500 freestyle and 200 freestyle split in the 500), Mazzotta (200 IM), Cierra Scully (50 freestyle, 100 freestyle and 100 butterfly), Allison Scott and Samantha Robles (50 freestyle), Kaylyn King (mile) and Kailey Turner (200 butterfly) all achieved personal-bests over the course of the three-day event.
"This weekend was a rehearsal for how we want to approach and attack a championship format meet," Roth said. "It's a grueling, exhausting format, and to say that our athletes handled it well would be an understatement. Every single swimmer had a season best performance this weekend, mixed in with many lifetime best performances. Our divers showed up in full force attacking each event and getting into finals with some of the best divers in The American. I'm beyond proud of this team and their tenacity, their resilience, and their attack and approach to opportunities.
"Our team came together and competed for one another, and showed up challenging and elevating each other to be at our best. We attacked the prelims to get into finals positions, and we were able to show up each night stronger than before. These athletes have been putting in the work all semester, and they deserve to be proud of the team they were this weekend, and excited for the remainder of the season as we look to preparing for The American in February."
The Mean Green will resume competition on Jan. 6, in Flagstaff, Arizona, in a dual meet with Northern Arizona and Colorado State. Fans can follow the program on Twitter and Instagram @MeanGreenSD.
