North Texas is coming off a historic season where they won a program-record 25 games and won a program-record 16 league games. UNT featured the nation's top scoring defense, holding opponents to a C-USA record 55.7 points per contest. The defense and clutch shooting propelled the Mean Green to a 16-2 league record that gave them the conference regular season crown.
Between Jan. 8 and March 3 of last season, UNT won a program-record 15 straight games. They won their first nine road contests of the year and were the last team in the country to lose a game away from home.
The Mean Green earned their first-ever bid into the National Invitation Tournament where they received a No. 2 seed. They defeated Texas State at home in the first round and hosted Virginia in the second round who they took to overtime before falling 71-69.
UNT returns first team all-conference guard Tylor Perry who last season made five shots in the final four seconds of regulation to either win or tie the game. Also returning is starting big man Abou Ousmane. The junior who hails from Brooklyn, New York, made one of the biggest statistical improvements last season in program history by increasing his scoring total by over seven points from his freshman season.
Along with Perry and Ousmane, North Texas retained starting guard Rubin Jones who was a defensive matchup nightmare for opponents and made notable shots throughout the 2021-22 season.
In addition to the nine total returners, the back-to-back-to-back league champs have added five newcomers who are all expected to make an impact on this season's team.
Head coach Grant McCasland begins his sixth season as the leader of the Mean Green. In his five total years, McCasland has won 104 games at UNT and led the program to three NCAA postseason tournaments, most notably the 2021 NCAA Tournament where they upset Purdue in the first round for the program's first ever win in the Big Dance.
McCasland, who has been identified by his peers as one of the best strategists in the game, leads his team on Monday against a NCAA DII program UNT has never faced before. The Crimson Storm went 21-10 last season and reached the championship game of the Great American Conference tournament.
North Texas owned a 13-3 home record last year and won eight straight home games before their overtime defeat against Virginia.
Monday the Mean Green will be aiming to win their 10th straight season opener. UNT enters the game against SNU having won 19 of its last 20 season openers.
