Men's Basketball Wins Season Opener

DENTON — The North Texas men's basketball team won its season opener, 53-47, on Monday night over Southern Nazarene at the Super Pit.
Junior Abou Ousmane recorded a career-high 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Mean Green to victory. Senior newcomer Kai Huntsberry added 20 points in his first game with UNT. He was a perfect 8-of-8 at the free line and made most of them late as North Texas ended the game on an 11-0 run.
"I knew I was going to get my opportunities today and we were going to go to me to attack," said Ousmane whose 21 field goal attempts shattered his previous single-game career high of 13. "I feel really good. It was a tough game. Give Southern Nazarene credit. We knew they were going to be a strong opponent. It's why we play them. They're a really good team."
North Texas forced 19 SNU turnovers on Monday and scored 25 points off the turnovers. UNT finished with 37 rebounds and had 18 offensive boards.
Monday's victory is North Texas' 10th straight season opening win and their seventh straight non-conference victory.
The Mean Green are on the road next as they travel to St. Mary's on Sunday for a scheduled 7 p.m. CT tip-off. The game will be streamed on the WCC Network and the Mean Green Sports Network presented by Learfield.
