PHOENIX — The North Texas men's basketball team defeated Grand Canyon, 60-58, Saturday afternoon in the 2022 Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Jerry Colangelo Classic held at the Phoenix Suns' Footprint Center.
UNT (8-2) was led by senior Tylor Perry who finished with a team-high 17 points, 15 of which came in the second half, as he brought his Mean Green back from a halftime deficit. Following the victory, Perry was named the game's Most Valuable Player.
"We held them to just four points after the final media timeout and I think that exemplified what makes us great," said head coach Grant McCasland. "What makes our team successful is their grit to find ways to win when the game gets tough and close. But give credit to Grand Canyon. They've got a great team and put us in some tough spots."
Though Saturday's game will count as a neutral site victory, it was far from it as the Lopes (7-4) packed the NBA arena with its fans who had to travel the short distance.
In addition to Perry's 17 points, Huntsberry led the charge early in the game and finished with 16 points. Junior Abou Ousmane had his third career double-double as he finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds. UNT is now 18-0 all-time when Ousmane makes five or more field goals in a game. He finished with six Saturday.
North Texas has a week off for finals and is back on the road next as they travel to Springfield, Massachusetts to face UMass on Dec. 17.
