DENTON — The North Texas men's basketball team is headed to the Valley of the Sun Saturday to face Grand Canyon University in the 2022 Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Jerry Colangelo Classic played at the Phoenix Suns' Footprint Center.
Saturday's game is scheduled to tip-off at 4:30 p.m. CT and will be streamed on ESPN+ and the Mean Green Sports Network, presented by Learfield on the Varsity Network app.
It will be the first all-time meeting between UNT (7-2) and GCU (7-3) who each reached the 2021 NCAA Tournament. It'll also be the first time since 2005 North Texas has played a game in the state of Arizona.
The Mean Green are riding a two-game winning streak and coming off a 60-57 road win at UT Arlington on Tuesday. Senior Tylor Perry led UNT to the three-point win with a game-high 22 points. He scored 17 points in the second half and made eight late free throws to seal the victory. Aaron Scott grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds and six offensive rebounds in the win. North Texas had 19 total offensive rebounds. UNT averages over 14 offensive rebounds per game.
Saturday will be UNT's first game ever at the NBA arena Footprint Center. The Mean Green last played in a NBA arena on March 21, 2021 at the Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis during the second round of the 2021 NCAA Tournament.
After North Texas' trip to Phoenix, they'll have a week off before facing UMass in the 2022 Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Classic on Dec. 17 in Springfield, Massachusetts at the Basketball Hall of Fame.
