DALLAS and FORT WORTH - The Mean Green swim and dive team had a productive weekend in the pool, highlighted by an NCAA Zone diving qualification by junior Brigid Krbec on Sunday at TCU, while the swimmers were led on Saturday at SMU by freshman Lexie Green two time trial wins.
Krbec got her NCAA Zone qualification in the 3-meter springboard on Sunday after posting a total score of 302.850 to win the event. She was followed up by teammates Altaira Wallquist and Saylor Hawkins, who finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
"It was a great weekend for the divers," said diving coach Stephanie O'Callaghan. "We hadn't been on tower since a training trip in December, so (Saturday at SMU) was a great opportunity to get ready for tower at conference. The ladies work hard at tower meets to fine tune their current dives while also working on new dives. And today, with our springboard meet at TCU, it was a great day for them to really see the progress they've made over the last few months. We saw a lot of fantastic dives and a few things we need to focus on as we sharpen things up leading into conference.
"We had new personal bests, which is always great. That will help really build that confidence as we near the end of the season. I'm super proud of Brigid getting a huge PR and her first-ever Zone cut. She truly had the meet of her life. I'm really proud of all the ladies this weekend and am excited to see this team working so well together."
Krbec will now join Hawkins (1- and 3-meter), who finished third in the 1-meter on Sunday, Wallquist (1-meter) and Olivia Dollar (1-meter) at the Zones meet March 7-9 at the University of Wisconsin, where they will try to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
"I'm really excited to now have four divers with Zone cuts," O'Callaghan said. "That's a huge step up for this team and the direction we want to take things as a team, especially as we look forward into moving into the American Athletic Conference."
On Saturday at SMU, the swimmers had time trials against SMU, when Green won both of her trials in the 500 freestyle (5:05.01) and the 200 butterfly (2:05.77).
"This was our last chance to fine tune details and execute race plans (before the conference meet)," assistant swimming coach Justin Hastings said. "Despite the weather affecting training over the last few days, the team came together and put up some good races to wrap up the season before championships. Lexie had a couple of near-best times and won both of her races. It was really good to see the team get up and support each other the way they did after the challenges of the week and the format of the meet."
The Mean Green will next head to Lynchburg, Virginia, for the Conference USA Championships, Feb. 22-27.
