The North Texas Division of Student Affairs, Department of Athletics and through the generosity of several donors, student tickets are free for enrolled UNT students.
"We are very excited to be playing in the NIT," said head coach Grant McCasland. "The goal every year is to cut nets and win championships. We earned this opportunity to play a quality opponent in front of our fans who supported us all year and we need them to help us toward our goal of reaching Madison Square Garden."
UNT earned an automatic bid into the 2022 NIT after they finished with the best overall Conference USA record (16-2).
This is the second consecutive season the Mean Green have made a NCAA postseason and the third time under fifth-year head coach Grant McCasland. It's the first time UNT has been to a NCAA postseason in consecutive seasons.
The Mean Green made program history last year when they upset Purdue in the first round of the 2021 NCAA Tournament, 78-69.
North Texas' 16 league wins this year was a program record and the second-most in the league's 27-year history. UNT's 24 overall wins so far this season is tied for the most in program history. The Mean Green feature the nation's No. 1 scoring defense holding opponents to 55.0 points per game, which is a C-USA single-season record.
During the conference schedule this year, the Mean Green won a program record 15 straight victories and closed out their regular season winning 21 of their final 23 games. Murray State was the only team in the country who did better in its final 23 regular season games.
UNT was also the last team in the country to lose a road game this year. The Mean Green began the year 9-0 on the road and had the nation's longest road winning streak. It's the longest road winning streak in program history.
The semifinals and finals of the NIT is hosted in New York City at Madison Square Garden. When McCasland was an assistant coach at Baylor in 2013 he helped lead the Bears to the NIT title.
