LAFAYETTE, La. - A red-hot second round on Monday has the UNT men's golf team squarely in third place entering Tuesday's final round of the Louisiana Classics at Oakbourne Country Club.
The Mean Green were led by sophomores Diego Prone and Vicente Marzilio, as the Argentine duo combined to go 13-under par in the second of two rounds on the day to lead North Texas to a 14-under par showing in the second round and 15-under for the tournament. UNT is four shots back of second-place LSU, the 25th-ranked team in the country. No. 21 Texas A&M leads the field at 34-under. North Texas is 10 shots up No. 17 Ole Miss and 14 shots up on No. 41 Little Rock.
Prone, playing in his first tournament of the spring, followed his opening-round 70 with a 7-under-par 65 - two shots off the tournament record - with the help of eight birdies, including six over a seven-hole span. He is tied for second place at 9-under heading into Tuesday's final round. Marzilio did his best to hang with his teammate and countryman by shooting a 6-under 66 with the help of two eagles and is tied for seventh at 5-under par. Senior Lenny Bergsson and fifth-year Viktor Forslund are both tied for 25th at even-par. The team's second-round score of 274 was the lowest for the Mean Green since November 2019, and Prone's 65 was the lowest for a player since Forslund fired a 65 in that same 2019 tournament.
Marzilio's two eagles are tied for the most in the field, and Prone's 12 total birdies is tied for second in the field.
The Mean Green will be paired for Tuesday's final round with No. 25 LSU and No. 21 Texas A&M. Play will begin at 7:30 a.m., with tee times from the first and 10th holes. UNT is slated to begin teeing off at 9 a.m. with Nikhil Gopal, followed by Bergsson, Forslund, Marzilio and finally Prone at 9:36 a.m. Fans can watch the Mean Green on ESPN+, beginning at 9:15 a.m., for the duration of the final round.
