
Softball Sweeps UTEP with 8-2 Sunday win

DENTON, Texas – UNT softball homered three times Sunday afternoon against UTEP to win 8-2 at Lovelace Stadium for its second league series sweep of the season. The Mean Green have now won 10 straight against the Miners.

"If we want to finish first or second in the regular season, we've got to get some sweeps. We could not let this game get away from us today. Especially when UAB is playing so well right now. We're a half game or so behind them right now, so we've got to sweep and keep pace with them."
RECAP:
UTEP (12-22, 2-9) grabbed the early lead in the top of the second when Pate Cathey homered to left field to take a 1-0 lead.
North Texas recorded three hits in the first three innings before responding in the bottom of the fourth. Emma Grahmann started the scoring when she reached on an error, allowing Mikayla Smith and Molly Rainey to cross home for the 2-1 lead.
The Miners immediately tied the game 2-2 with a solo homer to right center by Anna Sample in the top of the fifth.
Kailey Gamble crushed a homer to right to lead off the bottom of the fifth and then Grahmann knocked in another on a RBI double to right center for her second RBI of the day and a 4-2 UNT lead.
UNT (21-7, 10-2) stretched the lead in the bottom of the sixth with two more home runs. Kalei Christensen and Rainey each belted two-run homers in the sixth as North Texas busted the game open with an 8-2 advantage.
Ashley Peters started the game for the Mean Green and pitched 4.0 innings while striking out four batters before Skylar Savage took over in the fifth inning. The freshman improved to 8-3 and struck out four. Peters and Savage combined to hold the Miners to just two runs on three hits.
Rainey finished a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs, two RBI, one walk, and one home run.
Isabella Kelly pitched 3.1 innings for UTEP before Aalijah Alarcon (L, 7-12) came on in the fourth.
Anna Sample and Pate Cathey each homered for the Miners.
