UNT starts season with two separate high profile tournaments
DENTON, TEXAS (Sept. 15, 2022) – With four new faces and solid veteran returning leadership, the 2022-23 season for the North Texas women's tennis program is set to kick off its fall season Friday.
The Mean Green will be sending two student-athletes, Jasmine Adams and Matilde Morais, to the ITA Milwaukee Tennis Classic while the remaining five players will travel to Boston to compete in the Boston Invitational hosted by Harvard University. Both events will run Friday-Sunday with championship action occurring Sunday afternoon.
"This will be a great opportunity for three of our newcomers to get experience in college matches and for all of our players to start applying what we have been focusing on early this semester," Assistant coach Rodrigo de Almeida said. "We're excited to see them in action and representing UNT at these great events."
The duo of Morais and Adams head to Milwaukee, Wisc., for the invite-only event at the Western Racquet Club. The MTC will feature a UNT women's tennis player for the second straight year after Adams and 2022 UNT alum Lucie Devier competed in the tournament in 2021.
The Milwaukee Tennis Classic has been a nationally recognized national event since its inception in 1975. The MTC will once again be classified as an ITA Gold Level event, meaning the men's and women's singles champions will receive a wild card into the 2022 ITA Fall National Championships, to be held November 2-6 at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, California.
The remainder of the team consisting of Gloria Alogo Piqueras, Olivia Halvorsen, Sophia Hummel, Olivia Malm and Kexuan Zhou will all compete individually at Harvard in a field of 47 singles players and 24 doubles entries.
The singles main draw will be best two out of three sets while all doubles will be a single set competition. The field will consist of players from Harvard, Boston University, Boston College, the University of Rhode Island, and Providence. All individuals will be guaranteed at least three singles matches in the event.
All fall competitions for the women's tennis program will be held as individual events with no team scores. Players will have the opportunity to improve their individual rankings throughout the six currently scheduled fall events.
