DENTON — North Texas men's basketball senior Kai Huntsberry drained the game-winning jumper Wednesday night to lift the Mean Green to a 67-65 win over Louisiana Tech at the Super Pit.
With all eyes on Tylor Perry to take the shot for UNT, Huntsberry drove right and pulled up from the mid-range and sank the go-ahead shot with 2.6 seconds on the clock to lead the Mean Green to their fourth straight win.
"Coach drew up the play and said 'go get a bucket,'" said Huntsberry who finished with eight points and five assists. "It means a lot to me that my teammates would trust me to take it."
North Texas (14-3, 5-1) opened the game on fire and had one of its best first halves of the season. They led 36-18 and made 15 fields goals in the first half and had 13 assists.
But the pesky Bulldogs (10-7, 3-3) didn't give up despite the 18-point deficit.
LA Tech opened the second half on an 8-0 run and slowly chipped away at the Mean Green lead. Veteran LA Tech guard Kobe Williams challenged the North Texas defense all game and forward Isaiah Crawford was a menace around the rim and at the line. The junior was 13-of-15 at the free throw line as the game was closely called by the officials.
With 18 seconds left in the game, Crawford made two free throws to tie the game up at 65 apiece and fully bring LA Tech back from its 18-point halftime deficit.
Now with the game now tied, UNT head coach Grant McCasland called a timeout to draw up the game-winning shot.
"When you get in games like this you just got to find ways to win," McCasland said. "(Huntsberry) was able to get to his spot and make a nice play."
The Mean Green were paced Wednedsay night by Perry who finished with 21 points and had five made 3-pointers.
UNT hits the road next as they travel to Florida Atlantic on Saturday and then FIU on Monday. Both games will be broadcast on ESPN+ and the Mean Green Sports Network, presented by Learfield.
