Malm Leads UNT in Strong Showing at ITA Texas Regional

Junior out of Sweden advanced to round of 16 in singles main draw
WACO, Texas – The UNT women's tennis team had a strong showing at the ITA Texas Regional over the weekend with four players advancing to the singles main draw, led by Olivia Malm advanced to the round of 16 for the first time in her collegiate career.
Malm was joined in the main draw by Lou Chalard, Carolina Laydner and Stanislava Shulzhenko who all produced solid performances in the qualifying round to advance to Friday's main draw.
The Mean Green also had a team advance to the round of 32 in doubles as the combination of Malm and Lilly Schultz picked up an opening round win over Sam Houston.
As a team, UNT finished 11-10 in singles play and 14-14 overall.
In singles play on day one, Chalard opened things up with a 6-2, 6-1 victory in the first round before narrowly falling 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 in the second. The performance was good enough, however, to advance her to the main draw.
In addition, both Laydner and Shulzhenko started the competition with a pair of resounding victories to earn their spots. Laydner came from behind in her first matchup 6-7 [7-3], 6-2, 6-2 before rolling through her second opposer 6-2, 7-5. Shulzhenko, meanwhile, won 6-4, 6-4 and grabbed the first set in her second matchup 6-3 before her opponent retired due to injury.
Despite dropping her first matchup of the day, Nformi Stadfany was able to bounce back and win her second (7-6, [7-4], 7-6 [7-3]).
In Friday's main draw, Malm was the headliner as she opened things up with a strong 6-2, 6-4 win in the round of 64.
She then went up against TCU's Raquewl Caballero Chica, who came into the matchup coming off an upset of the #9 seed in the tournament, Drew Morris from SMU. Malm quickly dispatched of Caballero Chica, winning 6-4, 6-4. The sophomore would go on to fall in the round of 16 against Jermine Sherif from Texas Tech.
Chalard also was able to pick up a victory in the main draw, knocking off Maria Dzemeshkevich from Houston 6-4, 6-1 before falling in the round of 32.
After dropping her first matchup in the main draw, Shulzhenko moved into the consolation bracket where she produced a strong effort, winning back-to-back matchups in straight sets.
The Mean Green now have just two more tournaments remaining in the fall, starting with the John Cade Invitational hosted by Mississippi State in Starkville, Miss., Oct. 27-29.
