Women’s Tennis Finishes Strong at John Cade Invitational

UNT goes 5-1 on final day at Mississippi State
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Led by semifinal appearances from both Olivia Malm in singles play and Carolina Laydner and Stanislava Shulzhenko in doubles, the UNT women's tennis program produced a strong showing at the John Cade Invitational hosted by Mississippi State over the weekend.
In total, the Mean Green produced a 17-13 overall record going 11-9 in singles play and 6-4 in doubles. UNT finished the weekend strong, going 5-1 overall on Sunday including a 4-1 mark in singles competition.
Malm, who has been solid all fall for the Mean Green, opened things up with a 7-1, 7-6 [8-0] win on Friday and earned her spot in the semifinal with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 victory on Saturday.
In doubles play, the combination of Schultz and Stadfany opened Friday with a pair of strong victories, winning 8-3 and 8-4 to advance to the semifinal in the main draw.
Also on Friday, Carolina Laydner and Stanislava Shulzhenko teamed up to grab an 8-6 victory in doubles while Shulzhenko picked up a dominant 6-1, 6-0 win in singles.
On Saturday, Laydner bounced back from a first-round loss to picked up two big time wins 6-2 and 6-0, 6-1. She would go on to win another singles matchup on Sunday to put her overall record at 3-1 in the tournament.
Sunday was the strongest day of the three for UNT, led by singles victories from Lou Chalard, Laydner, Lilly Schultz, and Shulzhenko.
In addition, Laydner and Shulzhenko bounced back from a defeat in the doubles semis to win 8-6 in their final matchup of the weekend.
UNT will have one more fall tournament before they turn their attention to their dual schedule in the spring. The Mean Green will head to Tulsa, Okla., to compete in the Tulsa Invitational Nov. 3-5.
