DENTON — A few days after a thrilling overtime season opening victory over Northern Iowa, the UNT men's basketball team is back in action Saturday night from the Super Pit with a matchup versus the Omaha Mavericks.
Tipoff for Saturday is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and the Mean Green Sports Network, presented by Learfield. Prior to the start of the game the UNT Mean Green Scholarship Fund and UNT Alumni Association are hosting a pregame tailgate outside of Gate A of the Super Pit. The tailgate is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. CT and is open to the public.
The Mean Green (1-0) defeated UNI in the season opener 83-77 in overtime. UNT jumped out the gate shooting on fire. They made nine of its first 11 3-point attempts. In the second half they leaned on their defensive principles to limit a large comeback by the Panthers. They closed out the game making 13 of final 14 free throw attempts. Aaron Scott finished with a career-high 26 points. It's the second-most points scored in a UNT season opener in 15 years.
Omaha (1-1) opened the season Monday with a 85-53 home win over Doane. On Thursday they fell 82-60 at (RV) TCU. This will be the second straight year the Mavericks have played at the Super Pit. North Texas beat UNO 75-45 last year. It's the only other time the two schools have met.
