CHARLESTON, South Carolina – The UNT men's basketball team defeated Towson Sunday afternoon 65-39 in its final game of the 2023 Shriners Children's Charleston Classic.
Rubin Jones had a career-high six steals, dished out five assists and had no turnovers. The Mean Green outscored the Tigers by 38 when Jones was on the floor. Jones is the first UNT player in over 15 years to have six steals, five assists and no turnovers in a game.
Jason Edwards and Aaron Scott combined for 38 points on Sunday as they each scored a game-high 19 points.
"We have a ton respect for Towson and coach Skerry for the program he's built," said North Texas head coach Ross Hodge. "Through the ups and downs over the last week this team has stuck together and it showed today with one of the most complete defensive games we've had."
UNT (3-2) had 14 steals on Sunday and forced 21 turnovers. Both season highs and the most they've had in over two years.
Towson (2-4) was held to just 17 total rebounds while the Mean Green grabbed 32. Senior Robert Allen led UNT with nine boards.
In addition to his stellar performance taking care of the ball, Jones scored nine points as he guided the Mean Green to their largest margin of victory of the year.
"The effort we played with today to start the game was phenomenal," Hodge said. "Rubin (Jones) had great leadership, amazing defense, six steals, five assists, and no turnover. Incredible game by him."
UNT has a week off before its next game. The Mean Green will host Angelo State on Nov. 26 at the Super Pit. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and the Mean Green Sports Network, presented by Learfield.
