DENTON - The UNT swimming and diving team will become the first program from the school to go for a championship in The American when the American Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships begin Monday and run through Saturday in Dallas at the Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center and Barr-McMillion Natatorium.
The Mean Green have competed as a member of The American this season, while the rest of UNT's teams will officially make the move from Conference USA on July 1.
In addition to returning members Cincinnati, East Carolina, Houston, SMU and Tulane, new affiliate members Florida Atlantic, FIU, UNT and Rice will be competing for the women's championship. Houston is the six-time defending champion on the women's side.
"We're the first team in UNT history to go up against the strength of the American Athletic Conference," head coach Brittany Roth said. "It's an exciting time to be part of Mean Green Nation as our Athletic Department continues to rise as we Build Champions and Prepare Leaders. It's exciting to be part of our university where season after season we have UNT representing on the national stage. Our program consistently is in the mix at the CSCAA National Invitational Championships. The success that we see from every program at UNT is indicative of the care, commitment, and passion of our student-athletes, our coaches, our administrators, our alumni, and our donors and supporters. It's an exciting challenge to be in the position first for the university, and we intend to take on this new conference landscape with grit and heart."
The Mean Green have had a strong season with several student-athletes setting multiple personal bests in their ramp-up to the conference championship, and several achieving CSCAA National Invitational Championship cuts. Those A-cuts include the 200 medley relay, 400 medley relay, 200 freestyle relay, 400 freestyle relay and Diana Kolb in the 100 individual medley. Kolb also has a B-cut in the 200 backstroke, along with Shaena McCloud (50 freestyle, 100 butterfly and 100 freestyle), London Farris (100 freestyle), Laura Mazzotta (100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke and 200 IM), Kailey Turner (200 butterfly) and Kennedy Eichler (mile). Three divers - Saylor Hawkins (1-meter and 3-meter), Brigid Krbec (1-meter and 3-meter) and Olivia Dollar (3-meter) - have achieved their NCAA Zone cuts already this season. "As a team, we've had our sights on and we have been preparing for our conference championships," head coach Brittany Roth said. "This team has been united in our mission from Day 1, and they have been putting in the work to set up a great meet. I'm really proud of this team this season, and I'm looking forward to seeing how they can maintain their locked in mentality together."
Live coverage of event will be available on ESPN+ for all nine sessions. Prelims for diving on Monday and Tuesday will begin at 11 a.m., with finals starting at 6 p.m. Wednesday will have diving prelims at noon, followed by finals for platform diving and two swimming relays at 5 p.m. Swimming prelims will begin at 10 a.m., Thursday through Saturday, and finals will start at 6 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and on Saturday at 5 p.m.Â
