DENTON — The North Texas men's basketball team outlasted UAB Thursday night with a double overtime, 82-79, victory at the Super Pit.
The Mean Green were led by senior Tylor Perry who scored a game-high 28 points and was a perfect 10-of-10 at the free throw line. UNT's Kai Huntsberry finished with 15 points but eight of it came in the second five-minute overtime period as he led North Texas to its fifth straight win.
"It was a great college basketball game," said head coach Grant McCasland who won his 200th career NCAA game Thursday. "The crowd was awesome."
"I thought we won the tough stat areas," he added.
UNT (20-5, 11-3) outrebounded the Blazers (17-8, 8-6) who are one of the best rebounding teams in Conference USA, 39-32. Furthermore, North Texas committed just 10 total fouls to UAB's 22 and the Mean Green made 18 more free throws than the Blazers.
Junior Abou Ousmane finished with 15 points on 7-of-12 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds. Maybe more impressive and better was that in the 41 minutes he played Thursday, he committed just one foul.
"They really make it hard on us with their rebounding," McCasland said. "The times they've beaten us (at home) they've crushed us in rebounding. And that's what we emphasized to our team was to win the rebounding war and I thought for the most part we did (tonight)."
Thursday's double overtime win, which was the program's first double overtime game since 2013, gives the Mean Green a four-game cushion in the top two of the league standings as they sweep UAB. It also ends a nine-game streak in this series where the road team won.
North Texas remains at home as they host Charlotte on Saturday at 5 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and the Mean Green Sports Network, presented by Learfield.
