DENTON – McKenzie Wagoner collected a walk-off RBI single to clinch a 3-2 comeback win for UNT softball on Saturday over Charlotte at Lovelace Stadium.
"This team has been on the wrong side of a lot of tough losses all season, but they continue to fight," head coach Rodney DeLong said. "It was good to see one go our way today in a tough win against a great team. We will continue to fight, and we still believe that we are capable of doing something great this season."
North Texas (25-17, 10-7) collected its first comeback win of the season after a pair of walks followed by two infield singles from Tatum Sparks and Molly Rainey tied the game in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Mean Green struck the final blow against the 49ers (25-16, 12-4) when Wagoner fired a seeing-eye single into right field.
Ashley Peters (W, 9-7) recorded a single-game career high with 11 strikeouts over seven innings and tallied her sixth complete-game victory. She allowed two earned runs on two hits and two walks in a 123-pitch outing. Peters retired 11 of the initial 13 batters she faced including six strikeouts through four innings.
UNT opened the scoring in the second inning after Kailey Gamble led off with a double off the left field wall. Mikayla Smith followed with an RBI single through the left side to tie the game at 1-1.
Sparks led the team with her fourth multi-hit game of the season and finished 2-for-3 including a double in the second inning. She extended her career-best hitting streak to six games and improved to 9-for-17 in this period with four runs, three RBI and three doubles.
