North Texas improves to 8-2 over its past 10 games at Florida Atlantic
BOCA RATON, Fla. – UNT softball won 5-1 against FAU at Joan Joyce Field on Saturday and clinched its third consecutive Conference USA series.
Seven of the nine starters in the Mean Green (28-20, 13-7) lineup collected a hit including four doubles. The North Texas defense limited Florida Atlantic (30-17, 12-8) to one run on three hits and no errors.
McKenzie Wagoner (W, 10-6) was tabbed for the start and recorded a seven-inning complete game. She allowed one run on three hits and three walks with one strikeout. Wagoner lowered her ERA to 1.69 for the season, which ranks second in the conference.
Wagoner helped add insurance runs with a two-RBI double in the fourth inning after Kailey Gamble and Mikayla Smith led off the inning with a pair of singles.
Friday night hero Cierra Simon opened the game with a double to right field in the first inning. She would score from second base on a chopped ground ball for the opening run of the afternoon. UNT holds an 18-2 record, 7-0 in C-USA, when it scores in the first inning.
Kalei Christensen knocked in Lexi Cobb with an RBI double to the right-center field wall in the fifth inning. Christensen later scored on a wild pitch to tally the final run of the game for the Mean Green.
