DENTON — After a week off the UNT soccer team returns to action Thursday with a home match against longtime rival Rice at the Mean Green Soccer Stadium.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT and will be streamed on ESPN+.
North Texas (6-2-0, 0-1-0) heads into Thursday's league match versus the Owls (2-7-1, 0-1-0) having lost only one home conference match since Oct. 31, 2008. They are 65-1-3 in home league matches since then. Thursday will be the 18th all-time meeting between the two schools. UNT is 5-0-2 all-time at home versus the Owls.
However, the matches are always close.
Over their last 11 meetings, on average matches between the Mean Green and Owls have been decided by less than a goal (0.9).
Maybe the most memorable of recent matches was on Oct. 27, 2017, when UNT played a majority of a home match versus the No. 18 ranked Owls down a woman after an early red card was accessed. Despite playing shorthanded, North Texas came from behind to tie the match in the final seconds on a goal by then senior Cat Sebazco.
The Mean Green head into Thursday having earned a No. 34 ranking in the NCAA's first RPI poll. They are the second-highest ranked team in the American Athletic Conference and the second-highest ranked team in the state of Texas.
Thursday's match versus Rice will be UNT's lone match of the week. They hit the road again next and travel to UTSA on Sept. 28.
