DENTON — The reigning 2023 NIT champion UNT men's basketball team will host the Compete 4 Cause Classic exhibition doubleheader on Oct. 29 at the Super Pit.
North Texas will open the doubleheader against Sam Houston at 2 p.m. CT followed by a matchup between Texas Tech and Texas A&M at 4:30 p.m. CT. The exhibition is a charity event and ticket proceeds will benefit relief efforts for the devastating Maui wildfires.
Tickets are on sale now for this event and may be purchased by clicking here. Tickets start as low as $25 for this doubleheader exhibition. UNT men's basketball season ticket holders who have renewed for the 2023-24 season will have tickets for this doubleheader included in their package.
In addition to the Maui relief efforts, the backdrop for Compete 4 Cause Classic will be rooted in service, inspiring the participating student-athletes to use their notoriety and influence to impact the lives of children in the local community. U-Sports Group will partner with United Way of Denton County to provide community enriching activities that will greatly impact kids in need and be a rewarding experience for the student-athletes and universities.
Following the NIT championship, North Texas announced the elevation of longtime associate head coach Ross Hodge to its head coach position. Hodge, who has been on UNT's staff since 2017, has been the mastermind behind the Mean Green's defense that has led the nation in fewest points allowed per game average in each of the last two seasons.
During Hodge's six seasons on the Mean Green bench, he helped lead them to a combined 135 victories (22.5 per year), three conference championships, a 2018 CBI championship and the NIT title last season.
He's taken over a UNT team that returns three starters from its NIT title run, including 2022 all-conference honoree Rubin Jones who is just 11 wins shy of becoming the program's winningest player.
In the exhibition North Texas will face off against a Sam Houston program who they beat 75-55 in the second round of the 2023 NIT at the Super Pit.
This will be the first time Texas Tech has played at the Super Pit since Nov. 16, 2010 when they lost to North Texas, 92-82 (OT). It will be the first time Texas A&M has played at the Super Pit since Nov. 29, 1999 when UNT beat the Aggies, 91-88.
