DENTON, Texas – UNT women's basketball head coach Jason Burton collected his 200th career win Wednesday as North Texas defeated Tennessee State, 83-65, inside The Super Pit.
The victory marked Burton's 29th win at UNT, while the other 171 came in his nine seasons at East Texas A&M, formerly Texas A&M-Commerce.
"I thank God for the opportunity to be blessed with incredible student athletes that I've been able to coach over the years," Burton said. "I've been blessed with great coaches to work with and the staff I have right now is incredible and this wouldn't happen without them. I'm fortunate to be able to coach the teams that I've had at North Texas and A&M-Commerce. Hopefully I have a chance to have 200 more wins."
Tommisha Lampkin led the Mean Green with her fifth double double of the season, posting 22 points and 10 rebounds. The senior forward set a career high in free throws, converting 12 of her 14 attempts for the game, while also shooting an efficient 5-of-7 from the field.
Ereauna Hardaway, Kyla Deck and Jaaucklyn Moore each scored in double figures for North Texas in what was the team's second-highest scoring output this season. Hardway's 18 points is a new career high, surpassing the 15 she had reached twice in her career, including earlier this season against Texas Southern.
UNT led the entire game after getting out to a 24-7 lead in the first quarter. A 19-4 run during the period was sparked by four of Desiree Wooten's nine points and the Mean Green defense holding the Tigers to 18.8% shooting.
While UNT's lead got to as large as 28 points at 48-20 with a Hardaway layup to begin the second half, Tennessee State managed to battle back into the game. Sixteen second-half points from Angel Hill helped TSU cut the lead to 12 points with 5:09 remaining in the game, but a pair of turnovers led to North Texas extending the advantage back out to 16 and close out the game to improve to 6-2 on the season and 4-0 inside The Super Pit.
The Mean Green will remain in Denton for the week with their next contest coming Saturday against Southern Illinois at 2 p.m. CT.
