The Mean Green collect its third consecutive walk-off win for first time in program history
DENTON, Texas – Saleen Donohoe helped UNT softball collect a 3-2, walk-off win over Tulsa at Lovelace Stadium. Sunday marked the third consecutive walk-off win for the Mean Green after 1-0 wins on Friday and Saturday.
Entering as a pinch hitter of a 2-2 game with two outs in the seventh inning and a runner on second base, Donohoe punched a 3-2 single through the left side. Pinch runner Emma Grahmann rounded third base and headed for home. She was initially called out on the throw from left field but UNT challenged for obstruction at home plate. The call was overturned to score the game-winning run.
"Coach always has us ready," Donohoe said. "As soon as I was told, 'Hey, get a bat and start swinging,' all I could think of was 'This is my time.'"
The Mean Green (18-12, 8-1) swept the Golden Hurricane (19-11, 5-4) and held on to the top spot in the American Athletic Conference, currently tied with Florida Atlantic for first place.
"That's a huge sweep," head coach Rodney DeLong said. "Coming into [the series], I would've been happy to win the series but getting the sweep was big."
North Texas opened conference play with an 8-1 record for only the second time in program history on Sunday. Former head coach Tracey Kee led her 2014 squad to the mark in UNT's first season as a member of Conference USA.
Skylar Savage (W, 5-4) recorded her second consecutive win after she threw 2 2/3 perfect innings in relief. She entered the game down 2-0 with one out in the fifth inning and two runners in scoring position. Savage induced a pair of ground outs to end the threat.
In the bottom of the sixth, Molly Rainey ripped a two-out double to the wall and was followed by a walk from Elizabeth Moffitt. The duo stole second and third base before Lexi Cobb plated both on an infield single and subsequent error on the throw to tie the game at 2-2.
Mikayla Smith finished 2-for-4 and was the only player on either team to collect a hit in each game of the series.
