American Athletic Conference Championship
Southern Hills Golf Club | Brooksville, Fla.
The UNT women's golf team will head to the Sunshine State to take on the American Athletic Conference Championship for the first time. The program joined The American on July 1 on the heels of a third straight Conference USA championship, as the Mean Green became the first team since 2000 to complete a three-peat in C-USA. Unlike the last three years, UNT enters the event not as the favorite based on national rankings.
THE EVENT: Southern Hills will play as a par-72 course at 6,289 yards. The teams will play 18 holes per day, beginning on Monday and will play the final 18 holes during Wednesday's final round.Â
Â
THE FIELD: There are 12 teams participating in the tournament, including four teams ranked in the top 60 and three in the top 50: Charlotte, East Carolina, Florida Atlantic, Memphis, No. 34 South Florida, No. 27 SMU, Tulane, No. 53 Tulsa, UAB, No. 46 UNT, UTSA and Wichita State.
Â
REPRESENTING UNT: Competing for the Mean Green will be Shreya Pal, Ellie Roth, Mason Lewis, Bouquet Subsomboon and Emilie Ricaud. Kat Anglett will be the alternate, which means she can be subbed in freely after the first round.
Â
RESULTS: Live scoring and final results will be posted on GolfStat. A full recap will be posted on MeanGreenSports.com at the end of each day.
AKERS SAYS: "We are competing in a new conference this year but the goal has not changed," head coach Michael Akers said. "I certainly believe we can win and continue our tradition. Our team has talked about being in a stress-free situation because we are ranked inside the bubble so we are just playing for the ring. That is always my goal heading into conference and we have been here for the past few years. I think we showed some good things at OU (last week) and are trending in a good direction. We will take good notes in the practice round and will focus on playing the golf course and not the other teams."
MOVING UP: UNT has made significant strides since Akers took over eight years ago. The Mean Green were ranked No. 201 following the 2015-16 season, and since Akers arrived in Denton, UNT has soared more than 150 spots from that time. The Mean Green are now consistently ranked in the top 50 nationally and have qualified for three straight NCAA Regionals on the heels of three straight conference championships.
UP NEXT:Â The Mean Green will await their NCAA Regional fate as they look for a fourth straight Regional bid.Â
Â
STATE-OF-THE-ART FACILITY: The Mean Green golf programs are thrilled to have the new Bruzzy's UNT Golf Practice Facility, which is a $3 million on-campus facility that features state-of-the-art technology, such as TrackMan, swing catalysts, indoor hitting bays, a short-game area and a PuttView indoor putting green.
