BELLEAIR, Fla. - UNT senior Tucker Allen ended a great weekend at the American Athletic Conference Championship with his third round under par and a runner-up trophy as he finished the three-day event at 6-under par, two shots clear of third place, to wrap up his collegiate career.
Allen was one of two golfers in the field to finish all three rounds under par with his 66-69-69 and entered Sunday's final round in a tie for first but ran into a buzzsaw in the form of South Florida's Jake Peacock, who fired a final-round 64 to separate himself from Allen and claim the championship.
Allen led the way for UNT all weekend in its first time at The American Championship, and the Mean Green had a strong showing, coming in fifth at 13-over par and scoring a victory over sixth-place Charlotte, the nation's No. 73 team. Allen parred the first 13 holes of the day before a birdie on 14 and another birdie on 17 to put him at 2-under for the day. A bogey on his final hole gave him his second consecutive 69 to wrap up the event. Allen's runner-up finish secures himself a spot on the All-Conference team, which will be released on May 2.
UNT had one other top-20 finisher in fellow senior Cody Winkler, whose final-round 74 put him at 3-over for the event in a tie for 19th.
"It was such a fun first year with this group," said UNT head coach Luke Calcatera, who completed his first season as the program's head coach on another high note after claiming the program's first tournament championship since 2018 earlier in the week at the North Texas Intercollegiate. "Our seniors had so many great moments throughout the year, and they will definitely be missed. It was a really special week for Tucker - to be in contention and shoot a 69 today in the final round just shows how far he has come this year."
