The Match Play at Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club | Norman, Okla.
The UNT women's golf team will return to the Sooner State after last week's host event, The Bruzzy, for one final tuneup before the American Athletic Conference Championship as they take on a strong field in a unique event.
THE EVENT: Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club will play as a par-72 course at 6,448 yards. The teams will play 18 holes of stroke play on Monday with a shotgun start at 8 a.m., to determine seeding for the match play tournament. The first round of match play will begin at 1 p.m., on Monday. On Tuesday, the second round of match play will begin at 8 a.m., from holes 1 and 10, with the third round following at 1:30 p.m.Â
Â
THE FIELD: There are eight teams participating in the tournament, including seven teams ranked in the top 60 and three in the top 50: No. 35 Houston, No. 55 Kansas State, No. 53 Oklahoma, No. 37 Oklahoma State, No. 56 Texas Tech, Tulane, No. 54 Tulsa and No. 47 UNT.
Â
REPRESENTING UNT: Competing for the Mean Green will be Shreya Pal, Ellie Roth, Mason Lewis, Bouquet Subsomboon and Emilie Ricaud. Mallorie Luitwieler will compete as an individual.
Â
RESULTS: Live scoring and final results will be posted on GolfStat. A full recap will be posted on MeanGreenSports.com at the end of each day.
AKERS SAYS: "Our top 5 from the fall have emerged to start in this event," head coach Michael Akers said. "Mallorie earned a spot in the van to compete as an individual. We are again looking for consistency from the top of our lineup to the bottom. It would be great to get a win this week and take that momentum to Florida for the conference championship. This is a format we don't play very often so it will be a learning experience."
MOVING UP: UNT has made significant strides since Akers took over eight years ago. The Mean Green were ranked No. 201 following the 2015-16 season, and since Akers arrived in Denton, UNT has soared more than 150 spots from that time. The Mean Green are now consistently ranked in the top 50 nationally and have qualified for three straight NCAA Regionals on the heels of three straight conference championships.
UP NEXT:Â The Mean Green will compete for the first time in the American Athletic Conference Championship on April 15-17, in Brooksville, Florida.Â
Â
STATE-OF-THE-ART FACILITY: The Mean Green golf programs are thrilled to have the new Bruzzy's UNT Golf Practice Facility, which is a $3 million on-campus facility that features state-of-the-art technology, such as TrackMan, swing catalysts, indoor hitting bays, a short-game area and a PuttView indoor putting green.
