A pair of former UNT men's golfers will play on May 20 with a chance to earn a spot in 124th U.S. Open on the line.
Senior Cody Winkler, who just finished up his UNT career and turned pro following the AAC Championship, along with 2022 graduate Sean Wilcox are set to play at Dallas Athletic Club in the final round of qualifying for the U.S. Open, which will be played on June 13-16, at Pinehurst No. 2 in Pinehurst, North Carolina.
The duo earned a spot in final qualifying on Monday when they advanced out of a local qualifier at Coyote Ridge Golf Club in Carrollton. The top seven finishers on Monday out of 132 golfers in the field advanced, and Wilcox finished tied for second with a 70 while Winkler shot a 72 and tied for sixth before needing a five-man playoff for the final two spots. Winkler won the playoff with birdies on the first two playoff holes and pars on the next two.
The event at Dallas Athletic Club will be 36 holes in one day and the number of players who qualifying for the U.S. Open will be determined closer to the event once the size of the field is confirmed.
"I'm feeling really good heading into U.S. Open sectionals," Winkler said. "It's at Dallas Athletic Club, which is a course I'm familiar with and comfortable on. I know I'm capable of qualifying. It will just be about staying patient for the long 36-hole day."
