CARROLLTON, Texas – The UNT men's golf team went toe-to-toe with some of the country's highest-ranked teams Tuesday at the Maridoe Collegiate before ultimately taking fourth place.
After completing Monday's action in third, North Texas spent much of the day jockeying with ninth-ranked Arizona State and Baylor for leaderboard position prior to settling at 33-over for the week. That total put UNT two strokes back of Baylor for third and beat a pair of ranked SEC opponents in No. 15 Oklahoma and No. 16 Alabama. Defending national champion Oklahoma State ran away with the team title by 18 shots, led by co-medalists Ethan Fang and Preston Stout.
The Mean Green have now placed top four in four different tournaments this season, a substantial improvement from the 2024-25 campaign when it did so twice. Three of those instances have occurred this spring, the latest coming against an elite field at perhaps the state's toughest course with four underclassmen in the starting lineup.
Alex Huang was the top Mean Green performer with 11 birdies and a 5-over week that netted him 11th place. An early string of birdies had Huang one shot back of the lead Tuesday morning and helped cement his sixth top 25 in nine starts this season. Huang improved his standing by over 30 spots compared to last year's event at Maridoe Golf Club when he was tied for 42nd.
Both at 8-over, Blake Keen and Kalle Svederman claimed shares in a four-way tie for 15th. Despite an opening-round 79 yesterday, Keen was able to climb back up the leaderboard for his third top 15 of the season. Meanwhile, Svederman signed off on a closing 78 in what was his highest finish since joining the UNT program.
Notably, Rafael Estrada sank a hole-in-one on Maridoe's 11th hole, a 213-yard par three, while competing as an individual Tuesday. He finished the tournament tied for 22nd at 11-over.
North Texas now turns its attention to the regular season finale at the Mossy Oak Collegiate. That tournament is scheduled for April 13-14 at Mossy Oak Golf Club in West Point, Miss.
