NCAA Regional - Bermuda Run Regional
Bermuda Run Country Club | Bermuda Run, N.C.
The UNT women's golf team will attempt to advance past Regionals to the national championship for the first time in program history as the 9-seed at the Bermuda Run Regional, which marks the second straight year the team has played in an NCAA Regional in North Carolina and the fourth consecutive Regional berth for the program.
Â
THE EVENT: Bermuda Run Country Club will play as a par-72 course at 6,297 yards. The teams will play 18 holes on each day, beginning with the first round on Monday and ending with the final round on Wednesday. Tee times each day will begin at 7 a.m. The top five teams and top individual not on an advancing team will move on to the national championship May 17-22 in Carlsbad, California.
Â
THE FIELD:Â There are 12 teams participating in the tournament, including eight top-50 teams:Â No. 3 Wake Forest, No. 10 Texas, No. 15 Ole Miss, No. 22 Mississippi State, No. 27 UCF, No. 34 South Florida, No. 39 Tennessee, No. 45 Oregon State, No. 51 UNT, Delaware, Charleston Southern and Navy.Â
Â
REPRESENTING UNT:Â Competing for the Mean Green will be Mason Lewis, Shreya Pal, Ellie Roth, Bouquet Subsomboon and Emilie Ricaud. Kat Anglett will be the alternate, who can be subbed in prior to any round.Â
QUITE THE FOURSOME:Â UNT is the only team in The American to have an active streak of at least four NCAA Regional berths and one of seven non-P5 programs in the nation with such a streak. This will mark head coach Michael Akers' 10th career appearance in the NCAA Regionals as a head coach. Another impressive foursome for the Mean Green would be the four players named to the All-AAC team last week, which was the most of any program in the conference. Mason Lewis, Shreya Pal, Emilie Ricaud and Ellie Roth all earned all-conference honors.
Â
RESULTS: Live scoring and final results will be posted on Golfstat. A full recap will be posted on MeanGreenSports.com at the end of each day.
 Â
AKERS SAYS: "I feel good about our mentality going into Regionals," Akers said. "Last year, it felt as if we had outside pressure being the 6-seed and receiving so much attention heading into Regionals. This year we are flying under the radar and are trying to be stress-free. We have nothing to lose, which is a good place to be. We have four players just named to the All-AAC team, plus Bouquet, who is a very good player, as well. We have the players to advance, it is just a matter of four solid rounds each day.
"The golf course looks like it sets up well for us," Akers added. "This course has Bermuda greens and the speed of the greens should be similar to what we have been preparing for. The forecast looks like rain, so we are communicating that in advance. You must have the equipment and apparel for rain but also the right mind set. I see so many players worry about things outside their control. We preach embrace what gets thrown at you."
MOVING UP: North Texas has made significant strides since head coach Michael Akers took over seven years ago. The Mean Green were ranked No. 201 following the 2015-16 season, and since Akers arrived in Denton, UNT has soared more than 150 spots from that time. The Mean Green are now consistently ranked in the top 50 nationally.
UP NEXT: The Mean Green hope to clinch their first berth to the national championship, which will be contested at the brand new Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California, on May 17-22.
Â
NEW FACILITY: The Mean Green golf programs are thrilled to have the new Bruzzy's UNT Golf Practice Facility, which is a $3 million on-campus facility that features state-of-the-art technology, such as TrackMan, swing catalysts, indoor hitting bays, a short-game area and a PuttView indoor putting green.
