FORT COLLINS, Colorado – The UNT Soccer team kicks off the 2024 season with a pair of exhibitions in Colorado this week starting with a Thursday night match at Colorado State at 8 p.m. CT.
After taking on the Rams the Mean Green will make the short trip south to Boulder, Colorado, to face Colorado on Saturday at 8 p.m. CT. Thursday night's match at CSU will not be streamed but live stats will be available. Saturday night's match at CU will be streamed on YouTube.
North Texas returns nine primary starters from last season's team, which includes four of its top five goal scorers from a year ago. Led by head coach John Hedlund who is embarking on his 30th season at the helm of the Mean Green, the program's one and only head coach is just seven wins shy of his 400th career victory. A win Thursday or Saturday doesn't count towards his record.
This week UNT will take on a pair of challenging opponents in Colorado as they tune up for the season opener on Aug. 15.
The Rams are coming off a historic season where they won a program record 12 matches, ended the season winning six of their last eight and reached the title match of the Mountain West Championship for the first time in program history. Additionally, CSU returns its top five goal scorers, its goalkeeper and key defensive pieces from last season.
Colorado State finished last year ranked No. 90 in the RPI, which would have been fourth best in the American and right behind the Mean Green.
The Buffaloes are coming off a 13-win season and a NCAA Tournament appearance. Colorado had two top 25 wins last season and drew No. 13 USC. They return first team all-conference forward Shyra James who led the Pac-12 with 15 goals a season ago and alone accounted for 40 percent of her team's total. They also return defender Faith Leyba who was voted third team all-conference.
UNT's regular season opener is Aug. 15 at home as they host Oklahoma at the Mean Green Soccer and Track & Field Stadium. The Mean Green's first four matches are at home and include a Aug. 17 home match versus 2022 Final Four participant Alabama.
