DENTON — The UNT soccer team improved its unbeaten streak to four in a row with a 5-0 win over Southern Sunday afternoon at the Mean Green Soccer Stadium.
North Texas (3-2-1) got two back-to-back first half goals from Claire Niedermeier to open the scoring in the 25th and 27th minute. They took the 2-0 halftime lead into the second half where Summer Brown scored her second goal of the year in the 57th minute. Freshman Beya Rosales added on to the scoring with a header off a corner in the 66th minute and then senior Devyn Flannery capped the scoring off in the 84th minute with her 14th career goal.
The goal by Rosales was the first of her career.
"We got big goals today from a couple a freshmen," said head coach John Hedlund. "Claire with two early goals and Beya with a nice header off a corner. From there Devyn and Summer chipped in which gave us five goals for the day against a hardworking Southern team. Proud of my defense led by Abi (Major) and Maddie (Ogden), helping us get the must needed shutout."
Senior Rachel Roebuck entered Sunday tied for the nation's lead in goal scored. The Royse City native put two shots on target but did not find the back of the net versus the Jaguars, ending a three-match goal scoring streak. She did though assist on Brown's goal.
UNT outshout Southern (0-6-0) 43-4 on Sunday. The 43 shots are a season high for the Mean Green and the most they've had in a single match since 2021 when they had 43 shots against this same Southern program in a 7-0 victory.
Freshman Mean Green goalkeeper Hicks Bishop played a majority of the second half and made two saves to keep the shutout alive, they were her first saves of her career.
With the win Sunday head coach John Hedlund now has 396 career wins. Hedlund and North Texas will go for 397 on Friday when they travel to Incarnate Word for a 7 p.m. CT first kick. The match will be broadcast on ESPN+.
