Schooner Fall Classic
Belmar Golf Club | Norman, Oklahoma
The UNT women's golf team will look to follow a successful season-opening showing at the Powercat Classic in Kansas, with a trip to Norman for the Schooner Fall Classic, hosted by Oklahoma.
Â
THE EVENT: Belmar Golf Club will play as a par-70 course at 6,188 yards. The teams will play 18 holes per day, beginning on Saturday and concluding on Monday with the final round. There will be tee times beginning at 8:30 a.m., Saturday, 8:30 a.m., on Sunday and 9 a.m., for Monday's final round.
Â
THE FIELD:Â There are 16 teams participating in the tournament: Auburn, FAU, Florida State, Houston, Iowa State, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Oral Roberts, TCU, Texas State, Tulane, Tulsa, UNT, Virginia Tech and Wisconsin.
Â
REPRESENTING UNT: Competing for the Mean Green will be Shreya Pal, Malisone Chanthapanya, Katharina Anglett, Mason Lewis, and Bouquet Subsomboon. Mallorie Luitwieler will be competing as an individual and making her season debut.
Â
RESULTS: Live scoring and final results will be posted on Clippd Scoreboard. A full recap will be posted on MeanGreenSports.com at the end of each day.
GIVING BACK: One of head coach Michael Akers' favorite things about this event is the charitable aspect, as it raises money for the OK Kids Korral, which is part of the Toby Keith Foundation, and helps give pediatric cancer patients a home away home while undergoing treatment.
"This year's edition of the Schooner will be emotional with the passing of Toby Keith," Akers said. "We are very thankful that his wife Tricia decided to continue the event and give our players a tremendous opportunity. "
 Â
AKERS SAYS: "The field at the Schooner will be a step up from the teams we faced last event, so we are focusing on minimizing mistakes and plan to play the course with thought," head coach Michael Akers said. "I have taken many teams to Belmar over the years and feel we will be prepared."
MOVING UP: UNT has made significant strides since Akers took over eight years ago. The Mean Green were ranked No. 201 following the 2015-16 season, and since Akers arrived in Denton, UNT has soared more than 150 spots from that time. The Mean Green are now consistently ranked in the top 50 nationally and have qualified for three straight NCAA Regionals on the heels of three straight conference championships.
UP NEXT:Â The Mean Green will next head to the Land of Lincoln to compete in the Illini Women's Invitational at Medinah, at famed Medinah Country Club, on Oct. 7-8.
Â
NEW FACILITY: The Mean Green golf programs are thrilled to have the new Bruzzy's UNT Golf Practice Facility, which is a $3 million on-campus facility that features state-of-the-art technology, such as TrackMan, swing catalysts, indoor hitting bays, a short-game area and a PuttView indoor putting green.
