Ereauna Hardaway’s layup with two seconds remaining gave UNT the win
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Ereauna Hardaway's layup with two seconds on the clock proved to be the game winner, lifting UNT over Memphis, 73-71, inside Elma Roane Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon.
In front of approximately 30 family members and friends who made the short drive from Jonesboro, Ark., to Memphis, Hardaway hit the clutch bucket for the Mean Green after Memphis had tied the game at 71 with six seconds to play. The junior guard finished with 18 points, seven rebounds and seven assists on the day.
The Mean Green and Memphis battled for the entire 40 minutes despite UNT holding the lead for 36 minutes compared to the Tigers' two minutes. The largest lead of the game came following a 6-0 run to start the fourth quarter when North Texas extended the lead to nine.
Shortly after UNT's run, Memphis answered with an 8-0 run of its own and eventually took a 64-63 lead with 3:04 to play. Aniyah Johnson regained the lead for the Mean Green with a clutch and-one basket and converted the free throw before Alasia Smith tied the game at 71 with a layup of her own.
Johnson recorded her first double double of the season and fourth of her career with 14 points and 10 rebounds. With Tommisha Lampkin adding 14 points and 13 rebounds, the duo are the first UNT teammates to post double doubles in the same game since Lampkin and Kernal did so against East Carolina on Feb. 27, 2024.
Desiree Wooten was the fourth Mean Green scorer in double digits, finishing with 12 points on the day.
North Texas extended its win streak to four games and improved to 11-4 on the season and 3-0 in league play Saturday. The Mean Green will be on the road again Wednesday when it takes on Tulane at 6:30 p.m. CT in New Orleans.
