TAMPA, Fla. – Mean Green volleyball lost 3-1 (13-25, 25-23, 21-25, 21-25) at South Florida on Sunday afternoon at The Corral.
"We had a tough weekend," head coach Dave Fleming said. "We had some flashes of great volleyball, but we lacked the consistency that is needed to get wins in this league. The potential is there, but we have to get better when our uniforms are not on."
UNT (11-5, 1-3) held the Bulls to 49 kills, the lowest mark in four-plus set matches for USF (8-7, 4-0) this season, while the Mean Green limited All-American Maria Clara Andrade to 15 kills.
Sophomore Addison Achilles posted career highs of 11 kills, 24 attacks, three aces, four digs and 16.5 points as she added five blocks. Reagan Bedell, Lilly Croshaw and Jahniya Jackson each finished with eight kills.
In the first, UNT stayed within striking distance until the Bulls closed with a 13-4 run to win the set, 25-13.
The Mean Green bounced back in the second set as it held a trio of four-point leads before USF charged back to cut the lead to 21-20. A pair of service errors by the Bulls along with the set-winning kill by Bedell clinched the frame for UNT.
The two sides battled early in the third as there were five tie scores and four lead changes a mere 15 combined points into the frame. The Bulls took the lead at 8-7 and were able to sustain its advantage despite a late 5-1 run led by Jackson with a kill and solo block to trigger a timeout from the USF bench.
In the fourth set, North Texas fought its way to a 14-14 tie before South Florida scored five of the next six points. The visitors were not finished as a late block from Achilles and Croshaw cut the lead to 23-20 before the Bulls scored two of the next three points to clinch the set and match.
The Mean Green return home for a midweek showdown with rivals UTSA (9-5, 2-1) on Wednesday at 5 p.m. from the UNT Volleyball Center on ESPN+. Fans can purchase tickets HERE.
